UNT Rawlins Honors Residence Hall

Construction Cost : $30M | SF : 118,100 | 500 Bed Rawlins Hall is a new Honors Residence Hall consisting of thirteen 40-bed neighborhoods of dual occupancy rooms. The five-story structure responds to a plethora of site and campus master plan constraints. The major shaping element of the project included a new diagonal pedestrian mall and campus green referred to as Gateway Park on the west side of the residence hall which was part RSA’s scope. An east porch and amphitheater at the new residence hall links it to the main residential precinct on campus through a two story building lobby to the new Gateway Park. Campus heritage brick, flemish bond coursing and cast stone coping/trim were utilized as a background palette of elements against which new collegial design elements were introduced to nest the building comfortably within its context. Following the University’s design guidelines and campus master plan, specific elements such as “build-to edges,” building heights, materials palette and landscape/hardscape standards were incorporated into the project. RSA’s design called for corner glass wrapped lounges in each of the 13 neighborhoods overlooking Gateway Park and 4-6 person Study Rooms overlooking the east amphitheater and residential precinct. The upper two floors include media rich Multi-purpose Programming Rooms overlooking Gateway Park. The building contains a highly efficient 4 pipe VAV mechanical system connected to the central utilities loop. The efficient HVAC system produces energy savings in excess of 20% of ASHRAE 90.1 2010 requirements. Amenities include a Faculty-in-Residence, (13) Neighborhood Student Lounges, (14) Neighborhood Study Rooms, Reading Library, Billiards Room, Commons & Recreation Space, Piano Lounge, (4) Music Practice Rooms, (2) Multi-purpose Meeting/Classrooms, (2) large Multi-purpose Program Spaces and a Student Kitchen Area.
